AFTERCARE INSTRUCTIONS

Thank you for getting tattooed at The Electric Paintbrush, please read and follow these simple instructions to ensure a smooth healing process and care for your new tattoo.

  1. Remove bandage after 3-4 hours and wash your tattoo immediately. Please ensure your hands are throughly cleaned before touching your new tattoo, and to use clean running water at all times.

  2. Use fragrance-free antibacterial soap to build up a lather and wash the tattoo thoroughly with your fingertips in a small, circular motion - you will notice the ‘slimy’ build up of plasma, ink and vaseline wash away - try to wash it all off, without scrubbing hard. Rinse well with warm water.

  3. Pat dry with a clean towel. Take care not to scrub the surface of the skin, use only a clean towel or a disposable paper towel as the tattoo is still vulnerable to infection.

  4. Apply a small amount of aftercare ointment. A fingertip’s worth of ointment should be fine for most tattoos, do not apply more until the cream has fully absorbed into the skin. Too much cream can slow the healing process down, so take care to give the healing skin a chance to air out in between applications.

  5. Repeat wash/ aftercare ointment process 2x daily for 7 days. After this you can switch to a lighter fragrance-free lotion. Your tattoo should be fully healed in 10-14 days time, but this can vary from case to case.

  6. Avoid swimming, direct sunlight and saunas for 14 days. Exercise is fine but take care to keep the tattoo free from dirt, and avoid touching any potentially contaminated surfaces with the healing tattoo. Make sure to wash and apply ointment after any such activity.

  7. Do not pick scabs if there are any. You may or may not notice some slight scabbing on your tattoo, this depends on lots of factors but is a natural response and nothing to worry about. Do not pick scabs, let them come off at their own pace, your tattoo is fine underneath.

Following the above should ensure a smooth heal and give your tattoo the best start possible -  however we think it’s important to note that healing a tattoo is an organic process with many variables. If you have any issues which the above doesn’t cover, we ask you to please contact us here at the shop before taking advice from friends or elsewhere online.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Depending on the artist we can usually do either - best to ask them directly to be sure. If the artist prefers cash only, we advise sorting this out beforehand as we can’t guarantee our closest ATM will be operable. Please let us know in advance if this is a problem, and what we can do to help.

  • Yes! We welcome walk-ins on a first come, first served basis during normal opening hours.

  • Yes, the law states that anyone getting a tattoo must be 18 or over with iD, absolutely no exceptions, even with parent/guardian, note etc. We won’t tattoo you unless you can prove you are over 18.

  • We don’t allow pets for hygiene reasons. You can bring one friend but they will have to wait in the waiting area as we don’t have much space in the shop when there are a few people working.

  • We appreciate you might be anxious about your first tattoo. To give yourself the best chance at having a smooth experience, please make sure you’ve eaten well before your appointment and are well hydrated. Don’t drink alcohol the night before an appoinment, and please dont arrive drunk or stoned. Dress comfortably and make sure you are well rested. If for any reason you don’t feel up to it, please contact us with as much notice as possible.

  • Of course. We will always make sure you are happy with the design before we go ahead. Most small design changes can be done on the day of the appointment - however, if you decide on a big change in design, or location on the body, as much notice as possible is preferred. Drawing takes time and we’d rather do a great tattoo than a rush job.

  • This is obviously a case by case situation with many variables. Please speak to us in advance so we can advise - we may refuse work until we’ve seen a doctor’s note giving us the all clear to go ahead - particularly when it comes to dermatological and immunity issues.

  • Please give us as much notice as you can. Deposits are non refundable - but an appointment can be rescheduled given at least 24 hours notice.

  • We are excited to bring some of our great friends and even greater tattooers to come and work at the shop periodically. Please Follow our IG and check the website to stay updated and not miss out - as most of these people will be coming from out of town its advisable to book in early and avoid disappointment.

  • We go to some length to ensure all our inks and sundries are safe for use in tattooing. Any substance added to those inks would compromise their safety - especially when it comes to the various chemicals used in the embalming process that we don’t know much about. Why not play it safe and get a beautiful memorial tattoo instead?

  • Technically we can do a tattoo in white ink only, however we can’t guarantee how well it will age - white ink is not made to be used alone, more as an artistic tool in a more complex design used alongside stable colours and black. For this reason we won’t guarantee or offer free touch ups on a white ink tattoo.

  • Our shop minimum is £60, which will get you something very simple in design and up to about the size of a 2p coin. From there, the price goes up incrementally according to details such as size, complexity, location on the body etc. Most pieces are designed to be finished in one go, but obviously larger, ongoing work such as a sleeve or back piece works out as roughly £100/hr.

  • This is helpful to express the idea that you want, however tattoo design is a refined and specialised skill. We may recommend adapting your design to create a better finished product that will be easily applicable and stand the test of time. If in doubt please ask us before commissioning a design.

  • Yes of course. Most tattoos are drawn on paper and stencilled onto the body before the tattooing process. There is plenty of opportunity to change, pause and work with us on your tattoo before it is made permanent.

  • Sure thing! We are happy to design and tattoo all styles, and it is included as part of our service. Please contact us with some reference images to see if our ideas are compatible.

  • Of course, all of our work is guaranteed given you follow our aftercare instruction with due attention. Depending on the part of the body and design, touch ups can be more or less likely. Most issues can be sorted in a second session after initial healing - we offer this service free of charge, within reason and depending on the above, for 1 year after your tattoo appointment.

  • We aim to please with every tattoo, and our system is designed to avoid this situation at all costs - however due to the handmade nature of what we do, there is always a tiny possibility that you end up with something that doesn’t meet your expectations. In this unlikely event, we urge you to contact us here at the shop so that we can work together to find a solution - bringing another opinion into the situation will usually complicate things unnecessarily. Please note - it is shop policy that we do not offer refunds in any situation as outlined above or similar.

If you have any questions that are not covered with the above, please email us and we will try our best to help.
